Mission Possible

Years ago, on the T.V. show Mission Impossible, the team leader would receive a tape telling him of his next mission and it always began with the words, “Your mission, should you choose to accept it....”. When I think about my life as a Christ follower, sometimes that saying pops in my mind. My mission, should I choose to accept it.. Hey believer! We have a mission. The question is, will we choose to accept it?

One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 2:10. It says, ”We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Think of how Jesus called his disciples to follow him. They were just ordinary people. But Jesus didn‘t just see ordinary people, he saw something far more. Before they were ever called, God had already purposed every single event we read about those disciples in our Bible today. Their good works were already prepared. They were chosen. They were chosen specifically for the time and place in which they lived to further the kingdom and make more disciples. Their job was just to accept the mission. And they did.

We can think WOW that is amazing, and it is amazing! But the amazing thing is that as a believer, you are also chosen. Before you were ever called by name by Jesus, God had already purposed every single event that you should do to accept the mission: to further the kingdom and make more disciples. Yes we are created, chosen and called to follow Jesus just as the disciples were! They followed him for three years, learning about how he loved and served. They saw him seek out the broken, the sick and the outcasts. They watched him humble himself although he is King of Kings. They watched him care about the people who had been forgotten or thrown away by others. They watched him deny himself and take up the cross. They were called to follow Him and be like Him. So are we.

You are created specifically and uniquely to accept this mission in a place, a time and in a way that only you can. You were created to dream, love, serve and live in the things that God prepared ahead of time just for you. Don’t ever think you have to be a pastor or a missionary to a foreign land to accept the mission. Your mission can be accomplished in the office, at home with your children, at a coffee shop or even in a fitness class! God already designed the ways you can fulfill the Great Commission. Our job is just to accept it!
